Since it's invention, snowboarding is a sport which has steadily risen in popularity. It's not hard to see why - it can be a whole lot of fun for people of all ages and experience levels. As with any sport which involves travelling at high speeds down an incline however, there is always the possibility of a sudden impact or collision. Likewise, when jumps are concerned, there is always the possibility of an awkward or failed landing. Between these two possibilities (and a whole lot more), there is plenty of opportunity for one to fall victim to an injury. For that reason, it is important for anyone - regardless of ones experience level - to bear in mind their personal safety, as well as the safety of others, when engaging in the sport of snowboarding. Here are four measures we can bear in mind which will lessen the chance of our enjoyment of the sport being ruined by an injury, or even worse - a death. Wear Suitable Clothing You're obviously going to have to get reasonably wrapped up since being in a cold and snowy environment for any length of time can quickly get rather chilly. In addition to that, the logic of many amateurs is that the more excessive layers of clothing they wear, the less likely they are to get hurt when they fall. Whilst this may be true to a certain extent, wearing too many layers of clothing can be a bad idea for one very important reason: it restricts your movement. Not only would being too rigid and uncomfortable ruin your experience of the sport, but you're actually increasing your chances of having an accident. Again, keeping your balance requires constant adjustments to your overall posture and stance and thus it's important that you're able to move freely in the clothes you're wearing. Make Sure You're In Reasonable Shape The assumption of many amateur skiers and snowboarders is that engaging in such an activity is easier than merely walking. This is absolutely not the case. Retaining our balance, posture and direction when travelling at high speed on a slippery incline requires a lot of focus and uses muscles which may be relatively under-utilized in regular day-to-day life. Even those with a lot of experience find the activity tiring, so what chance do you have if you are exceptionally unfit? If you fall into this category, do yourself a favour and increase your overall health and fitness levels a little before booking your trip. The last thing you want to do is increase your chances of injury by being more susceptible to falls as a result of being weak and unfit. Wear Suitable Protection Yes, we realize that just like wearing a bicycle helmet is regarded as being uncool, neither is wearing any other form of protection when engaging in a hobby or potentially dangerous activity. However, it's a mighty good idea and one you'll be thankful for engaging in if and when the time comes that you're involved in an accident. One of the more common injuries a snowboarder experiences is wrist fractures. This is particularly true with amateurs who obviously fall over more frequently. The natural reaction is to put out ones hand to break ones fall, and this is something that cannot be avoided. For this reason, it's a good idea to wear some kind of wrist support aid in order to reduce the chances of a fracture or a breakage as a result of a hard or awkward fall. The same goes for wearing head protection. Helmets can reduce the chance of head traumas which have the possibility of leading to concussion or even something much more serious. Do Your Stretches and Warm Up Like when engaging in any other demanding physical activity, it is important to stretch your muscles and do your warm ups prior to starting. This is predominantly to lessen the risk of pulling a muscle, and also to increase your limbs freedom of movement. There are of course many more considerations to make when going snowboarding, but this handful of tips should set you in good stead and allow you to fully enjoy your trip in a safe manner.
